An important 4-dial brass and brass-gilt striking skeleton clock on a marble plinth. Large white enamel dial with Arabic numerals for the hours with inner date ring in Arabic numerals. Finely cut gilt-brass minutes and hour hands. Fine steel centre-sweeping seconds hand and calendar hand. Subsidiary dials below, one calendar rings for days of week, one subsidiary dial for the months, both with their symbolic signs. The lunar dial above with phase and 29 ½ day scale. Movement with two barrels and pin wheel escapement, gridiron pendulum. Hour and half hour striking mechanism on one bells. The whole raised on struts above two pillars on a black marble rectangle shaped pinth with ormolu feet. Signature in the front beneath the pendulum lens: Hubert Sarton à Liège.
Aesthetically and technically a very remarkable and important clock form the Sarton workshop. Hubert Sarton (1748-1828) Liège (Belgium) is one of the great watchmakers of the 18th-19th century and is known for its fine multi-dial skeleton clocks. HxWXD 51x27x12 cm.
