Eardley Norton quarter chiming table clock, original Chinese lacquer painting, circa 1770.
Chiming on a nest of 8 Bells. Hour strike on a separate Bell. Verge escapement. Fusee movement. Strike/Silent. A foliate engraved backplate. The case-top with bronze gilt vase finials. On the side brass handles and four floral caryatid corner mounts. Dimensions : HxWxD 50x31x22cm. Price on request.
The maker:
Eardley Norton of 49 St. John Street, Clerkenwell, London was first recorded in 1762 he was registered in the Clockmakers' Company 1770-1792. He is an excellent maker, Norton is particularly famous for his musical and astronomical clocks. A superb four-dial astronomical clock by him is in the British Royal Collection. His business was taken over on his death by Gravell and Tolkien.
