A Charles II period brass lantern clock by Thomas Wheeler, Neare The French Church, London. This attractive brass lantern clock has a patinated brass case with a dial which has a crisply engraved centre and a central disc for setting the alarm mechanism. The case has an engraved and signed front fret with entwined dolphins flanked with pierced decorative foliage and is surmounted by the brass bell and finial.
In an excellent condition. Height: 38 cm/ 15 inch.

Thomas Wheeler was apprenticed to Nicholas Coxter in 1647/8 and was free by 1656/7. He held a number of positions in the Clockmakers Company, including Assistant in 1674, Warden in 1680 and Master in 1684.
The Clockmakers Company was founded under a Royal Charter of King Charles I in 1631, that makes this organization coming up to 400 years old and one of the oldest guilds in the world.
Work known - longcase clocks and lantern clocks, usually signed 'near ye French Church in London' or 'Thomas Wheeler, London' or 'Thomas Wheeler Londini Fecit'.
