Johann Bernard Klombeck (1815 - 1893) was the most talented student of the great Dutch Romantic landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. After receiving his first painting lessons from his uncle Matthias Tinthof, he was introduced to Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, who settled in Cleves in 1834. Klombeck was one of the first members of the drawing Academy Koekkoek, that consisted of a variety of landscape painters who became known as 'Cleves Romanticism'. They were influenced by Koekkoek's style of painting, which he explained in his study book for young painters "Herinneringen en Mededeelingen van eenen Landschapschilder" (1841). Klombeck specialized in romantic forest scenes derived from careful observations of nature and became the leading member of the romantic school that flourished in Cleves in the nineteenth century. He took part in many exhibitions in both Holland and Germany.
