The Bridge in Mostar The Bridge in Mostar

Dirk Filarski was a traveling artist who spend weeks abroad capturing cities and their ambiance. In the fall of 1937 he travelled to Yugoslavia where he visited Dubrovnik, Trebinje, Kotor, Frogir and Mostar. Today Mostar is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The works he created during these travels in 1937 and 1938 are the final ones where Filarski signed with D.H.W. Filarski. From Spring 1938 and onwards he only signed his works with his last name, leaving out his initials.

A newspaper article published in the Alkmaarsche Courant in March 1938 talks about the exhibition held at the Gallery De Ronde Brug in Amsterdam where this painting was on display. They write about this painting: “How beautiful is this city situated with the ancient Turkish bridge and with the minarets in front of the mountains and how impressive is the river that is flowing down from the mountain. The beauty of this piece lies in the fact that the architecture in color harmonizes very well with the surrounding landscape.”
