Otto Eerelman was a student at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and later continued at the Academy in Antwerp (1864-1865). He started out as a painter of old-Dutch interiors and genre pieces, but later on became renowned for his paintings of horses: in the meadow, in front of a carriage or sleigh, at the circus. His paintings of Queen Wilhelmina depicted as an amazon are especially famous. In this painting we see her parents King Willem III and Queen Emma. His later work, dating from the early 1880s, concern mainly portraits of dogs or puppies in a group. His work is represented in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Groninger Museum and others.
