Apollo Belvedere Apollo Belvedere Apollo Belvedere

Statue in bronze from Grand Tour period after the original in marble.

The marble statue of the Apollo of Belvedere is perhaps one of the most famous icons from classical antiquity. It was excavated in the 15th century and has been in the 'Cortile del Belvedere' since the early 16th century, now part of the Vatican museums. The 18th-century art historian and archaeologist Winckelmann considered the statue to be one of the most beautiful from classical antiquity. Some Grand Tourists even had themselves portrayed in the posture of this Apollo, in contrapposto with their left arm extended.
