A bronze reduced copy of the statue of ‘Day’ by Michelangelo. The original is to be found in the chapel of the de Medici in the Basilica di San Lorenzo in Florence and is part of the tomb of Guiliano de Medici. Day is depicted as a resting giant in a somewhat force pose.
The personifications of Day and Night were popular themes in the 18th century, making their copies after classical sculptures very salable. André-Charles Boulle designed clocks with depictions of day and night in the early 18th century. His inventory of 1732 mentions models after originals of Michelangelo. He used these bronze images on various clocks until the mid-18th century. It is remarkable to see that the original unfinished image has been worked out in detail in Boulle’s copies.
