CARPEAUX Jean-Baptiste (Valenciennes 1827 - Courbevoie 1875). Bust of Le Génie de la danse. Bronze with double gilded sheen. "Vert Maurin" marble base. H 70cm x 40cm. French school. Littr. Carpeaux is considered as one of the greatest 19th century french master sculptor. His style is characterized by mouvement and an excellent rendering of the instant. This bust is taken from the artist's masterpiece "La Danse", finished in 1869 for the decoration of the "Opera Garnier" entrance. This massive group (H 4m20) composed by 8 dancing figures around the "Genius" is now exhibited in the Orsay museum.
