The skilled suminagashi works by Japanese artist Ryosaku Kotaka astonishingly combine traditional Japanese marbling technique with fresh modern vision.
In his smaller works such as above, Kotaka tends to draw focus on colour texture rather differently from his larger works. His works produced on a smaller scale demonstrate the intricacy achieved in suminagashi design as opposed to the calm ink wash tones of his larger pieces.
Furthermore, vibrant use of colour combined with textures reminiscent of those seen in water, soil oil and lava demonstrate the playful diversity of which suminagshi in capable. This artwork demonstrates this well using colourful vigour whilst exploring contrasts between complimentary colour pairs and reflection. Movement is present and carried along by the central line from which playful and bright patterns appear.
