French Empire Commode

Price: Price on request

Offered by Kollenburg Antiquairs BV

A French Empire commode on four flattened bun feet with four drawers. The front feet support mahogany veneered pillars that end in Corinthian capitals in gilt bronze. The protruding top drawer has a blind front that rests on the side pillars. The commode is covered with a black granite top.

The Empire style, which derives its name from Napoleon Bonaparte, is characterized by the use of classical elements like Greek columns, components of Roman architecture and Egyptian motifs. Stylized shapes are decorated with martial details, palmettes and sphinxes. The style saw a short but impetuous heyday in the early nineteenth century.
