This type of chest was manufactured in the 16th and 17th centuries in Nuremberg, Germany.
 
The lid of the chest has an intricate locking mechanism, often with a hidden keyhole.
 
The locking mechanism was covered on the inside by a engraved cover plate.
 
Iron chests were used for storing money and important documents at home, in churches and on ships.
