These two plaques depict priestesses sacrificing on an altar. Libations of for example olive oil were not unusual in ancient times. Ancient representations of libations have been handed down in can be seen in ceramics and sculpture from that period. With the publication of Gedancken über die Nachahmung der Griechischen Werke in der Mahlerey und Bildhauer-Kunst from 1755, the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann provided a revival of the interest in classical antiquity that culminated in Neoclassicism in Europe. The imitation of antiquity in architecture and art became fashion. These highly decorative plaques of poignant priestesses are a wonderful example of this. The presentation of the libation was common in the eighteenth century not only in sculpture, but also in prints and medal art.
