A Pair of French Empire Cassolettes A Pair of French Empire Cassolettes

A pair of Empire cassolettes in the shape of vases standing on columns. The columns and the vases are elaborately chased and decorated with acanthus leafs. The covers are decorated with a repeating motif of palmettes and when turned upside down also function as candle holders. In the 18th century cassolettes were vases in which one could put fragrant flower blossoms or perfume. In the second half of the 18th century the cassolettes were also designed with a double usage with in the cover a concealed candlestick.
