Dutch Louis XVI Overmantel Mirror

Price: Price on request

Offered by Kollenburg Antiquairs BV

The mirror has a carved frame of which the inner edge is decorated with a stylised pearl border and the outer edge is decorated with dependent leaf motifs. At each of the four corners are rectangular blocks with ornamental rosettes. The top of the mirror is decorated with a tilted basket holding flowers, fruit and harvesting tools. Upon the flower basket is a sun hat, itself topped with a sheaf ornament.

Mirrors were hung on mantels and between windows throughout the eighteenth century, forming a regular part of a room’s furnishings. Usually, mirrors were flanked by sconces or appliqués so that they could reflect the candlelight and thus make the most of the available light.
