French Louis XV Console d’Applique French Louis XV Console d’Applique

A small Louis XV giltwood console table. The apron is richly carved and has openwork at its centre. A floral medallion with foliage unfolding from the medallion. Four supports gracefully curl from the richly carved apron to meet at the bottom via a stylized, arched spacer. The entire console is airily and playfully embellished with openwork foliage and decorative flowers. The scalloped Rosso Levanto top follows the contours of the apron.
The console hangs freely on a wall and is not supported by its legs.

Consoles were a customary part of the finishing of interior walls. They were elements of the wall panelling of a room and were often complemented by a mirror in an exquisitely carved frame.
Designs for consoles such as these and various parts of the panelling were provided by architects as well as designers or ‘dessinateurs’ and carved by ‘Maître-menuisiers.’ Unfortunately, they were seldomly signed.
