A 17th century Dutch wall table A 17th century Dutch wall table

This marble-topped wall table rests on a gilded wooden base in the shape of an eagle standing on a sphere.

The eagle stands for the higher, the serpent for the earthly.

A carved base was fashionable at the time, second half of the 17th century.

Often the "kwab" ornaments of these tables were combined with flowers and/or fruits, animals or cherubs.

An eagle with protruding wings was not common.

Dutch, about 1685.
