Drawing by Dalí stolen from Manhattan gallery

24 June 2012

A drawing by surrealist painter Salvador Dalí has been stolen from an art gallery in Manhattan on Tuesday, by a man who took it off the wall and carried it out in a black shopping bag.

Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio” the watercolor-and-gouache drawing, created in 1949 is valued at $150,000 (£96,027 or €120,000).

The police released surveillance images of a man in a black-and-white shirt carrying a bag. They described the man as 35 to 45 years old, with a receding hairline.

The Venus Over Manhattan gallery, which only opened its doors for the first time in May, is owned by art collector Adam Lindemann. The stolen drawing was one of two Dalí works in Mr. Lindemann’s first exhibition.
