Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter (Antwerp 1575/1580-1638 Amsterdam) was a pupil of David Vinckboons the Elder. He painted landscapes in the tradition of Gillis van Coninxloo the younger and Roelant Savery and was influenced by Pieter Brueghel. He was the father of Gijsbert and the grand-father of Melchior de Hondecoeter: a well-known family of painters; Melchior was one of the most famous poultry painters of the 17th century.
