The Bavarian arts minister, Wolfgang Heubisch, announced in Munich on Monday that the Pinakothek der Moderne will require a major restoration of its entrance hall to address cracks that were found in its walls.
The total cost of the project is estimated at €750,000 ($990,000). The cracks were initially discovered last fall and prompted a temporary closure of the museum while tests could be conducted to ensure structural stability and for a scaffolding to be erected. However, speculations that the renovations could necessitate another closure have caused concern that the institution’s programming would be interrupted.
Highest on that list is their exhibition of Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann, and Willem de Kooning, titled “Women,” and sent to open in March. The highly anticipated show made “top exhibitions for 2012″ lists across the German press, including ARTINFO Germany’s own, year of the German blockbuster, for which it is perhaps second only to the Neue Nationalgalerie’s Gerhard Richter retrospective in terms of projected fanfare.
At this time, it is unclear when renovations will begin.
