From 1809-1812 Knip travelled through Italy, where the landscape around Rome and Naples inspired him to paint panoramic landscapes. In doing so, he aligned himself with the Italianisants, artists from the Northern countries who traveled to Italy and were impressed by the Italian landscape and light there.
The paintings of the Italianisants consist of fantasized hilly landscapes, on which the bright, often golden sunlight in Italy plays an important role. The paintings are upholstered with figures, and some added prominent architectural elements.
