Movement
A Dutch longcase clock with a brass velvet covered XX-inch dial with silvered chapter ring in English style with Roman numerals signed "Joseph Story Amsterdam". Below the XII a small silver-plated disc with a gold-plated hand. Above the VI an aperture with calendar work. The winding holes surrounded by decorative rings. The foliate pierced gilded brass hands richly engraved. In the four corners gilded brass cherub spandrels. The movement has a running time of eight days with detent escapement. Characteristic for early Dutch clocks is the half hour striking chain with locking plate mounted on the great wheel. The movement has a Maintaining power bolt-and-shutters system.

Case
An oak case veneered with walnut and solid, twisted columns to the hood. Square base on four bun feet. The rectangular door to the trunk gives access to the pendulum and weights. The hood of the clock is flanked on either side of the dial by twisted columns. The dial is accessible by sliding up the hood, the so-called Rising Head.

Joseph Story
Joseph Story was born in Paris around 1665. A Huguenot, he fled to the Netherlands in 1685. He worked in Amsterdam for 12 years before moving to Utrecht in 1698. Joseph Story died there in 1703. Unfortunately, little of his work is known.
