This engraving forms part of series engravings that were collected in the 16th century under the name of 'Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae', The Mirror of Roman Magnificence. Already by 1540 the Frenchman Antonio Lafreri started publishing maps and views of ancient Rome and its antiquities. Lafreri was the first, in 1575, to use the title Speculum Romanae. After that Grand Tourists and collectors made their own choice from the works by Lafreri or others (as in this case Bertelli) to have these bound into their own Mirror of Roman Magnificence. This engraving comes with a very nice gilded frame.
