Ariccia is a town in the Albano Mountains of Lazio, southeast of Rome, and was popular with travellers on the Grand Tour. Palm visited Ariccia twice in 1850, both in summer (our painting dates from July/August of that year) and in winter. Another of Gustaf Palm's views of Ariccia, in the same colour scheme as our painting, is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
