Dutch Louis XV Corner Cabinet

A stately Dutch burr walnut corner cabinet with four doors on two tiers. The shaped doors are decorated with raised paterae. On the upper doors, this applied decoration is interrupted by a richly carved, solid walnut ornament. The cabinet is raised on two claw feet. Above them the shaped apron which is decorated with subtle light-wood line inlay reflecting the shape of the apron. The serpentine shaped top features richly carved solid walnut consoles at the centre and sides. In the past, these may have served to hold a set of porcelain ‘kaststel’ garniture vases or bowls.
The interior of the upper cupboard features three shelves and three drawers. Below these two pull-out plateau shelves.

This exquisitely executed corner cabinet with its stunning original patina and lavish overall appearance likely served a dining or drawing room and had a twofold function. Silver and glassware and any porcelain objects were kept in the cupboard. When the cabinet was opened and the shelves were pulled out, it also functioned as a buffet with which the guests could be served while they admired the valuables on display.
