Description

A French Empire ormolu mantel clock in the form of a magic lantern carried on the wings of Cupid, circa 1800. The 10-cm dial has Roman numerals and is signed Varcollier à Marseille. Its unusual bezel is decorated with silver stars on blue enamel, and the pierced, engraved hands are gilt brass. The two-train movement runs for at least eight days and has anchor escapement, a silk-suspended pendulum with a butterfly-shaped bob, and countwheel striking on a bell at the hours and half-hours. Cupid has enamelled eyes, a bow and a quiver. The oval base has a relief of loving putti and rests on bird’s feet. Height 45.5 cm; width 24.5 cm; depth 13.5 cm.
