Description

The ovoid shape of this pair of tobacco pots is provided with a rare decoration. The yellow diamond shaped cartouche is surrounded with floral cartouches and guirlandes and awarded with two sigares and flowers. Inscription in the cartouche is in the french language: "TDE BRESIL," and "TDE VIRGINIE,", means "Tabac de Bresil" and " Tabac de Virginie" . The bras lids en suite are from later date.

Ex collection: Mr. J.G. Wurfbain, till 1979 owner of the castle "De Gelderse Toren". The castle is a large round tower located in Spankeren (Rheden municipality) in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The castle is first mentioned in 1179.

Auctioned in December 1979 by "Notarishuis Arnhem".
