Description
Isaac Israëls, together with George Hendrik Breitner, was the most important representative of the group of Amsterdam Impressionists. He painted fragments of the 'accidental life' that he found in the shopping streets, coffee houses, and cafés chantants where the busy, urban life unfolded. With a few precise charcoal lines or loose quick brushstrokes with subtle color accents, the artist captured what he saw. He became the painter of the turbulent nightlife with a free, graceful impressionistic touch. From 1905 to 1913, Israëls lived in Paris, where he was impressed by Edgar Degas and the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He had his studio on Boulevard de Clichy. He painted the specific Parisian motifs: the public in the parks, the cafés, cabarets, and bistros, and the circus and fairground acrobats.
