Pupil of his father Hermanus Sr. lived and worked in Amsterdam and Niewer Amstel. From the sixties on he stayed regularly in London, where he finally settled in 1869 and opened an art gallery in 1880. Besides his own work Hermanus sold in England many years work by family members, among others, his father and his uncle BC Koekkoek. He painted mainly sea, river and beach scenes; also worked under the pseudonym 'Jan van Couver' and 'L. van Staaten'. Both in England and in the Netherlands Hermanus years worked with the landscape painter Lion Schulman. Around 1880, his work is less romantic and the influence of the Hague School recognizable.
