Description
The Mother of God of Tichvin belongs to the Hodegetria type, which is the Guiding Mother of God. Due to the inclination of the Mother of God's head, the icon has acquired something very lovely and lacks the severity that usually accompanies this type. The origin of the 'original' representation of the Mother of God of Tichvin is known from various traditions. In the year 1383/86, this 'original' icon appeared in an unearthly light above the water of Lake Ladoga to some fishermen and remained standing on the bank of the Tichvinka river. This is how she got her name. A church was first built at this location, and later in the year 1560, a large monastery was built. The right hand of the Mother of God has been restored. Both garments have been embellished later. The feast day of the icon is celebrated on June 26. The two additional saints on the icon are Church Father John Chrysostom on the left and Saint Juliana on the right.
