Description
Very extensive collection of Russian travel icons available in the gallery in Amsterdam from the 17th to 19th century.
The travel icon is closely intertwined with the daily life of the Orthodox believer. It is a tool for him that serves not only in the liturgy of the church but has a much deeper meaning. The believer used and kissed the icons out of devotion and faith. The icon was a visual support for the believer in experiencing the invisible faith. These small icons were often taken on journeys by the Orthodox believer, as they were less vulnerable than wooden icons and much easier to carry. Given the hard material, they suffered little damage. Through frequent use, wear marks may be visible, but that actually gives the icon a patina.
