The painter Nicolaas Riegen was born on May 31, 1827 in Amsterdam. Riegen lived and worked all his life in his hometown. Riegen was very adept at making sea and river views on choppy waters and in calm weather. He also painted cityscapes and landscapes in the style of the Hague School.
Riegen exhibited his work during his life at exhibitions in Arnhem and Maastricht. Although he was registered as a painter by profession, his work was not seen very often.
In 1872 he became a member of "Arti et Amicitiae" in Amsterdam.
Museums: including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Twente in Enschede.
