The Harlequin is one of the best known comic servant characters from the Italian Commedia dell’arte. The Harlequin is characterised by his costume. His role is that of a light hearted, nimble, clever servant - often acting to thwart the plans of the master. He later develops into the proto-type of the romantic hero.
