A Dutch commode in a sober design with an exquisitely elegant and rich decoration. Standing on four tapering legs and brass bun feet; the legs have a waisted section just below the frieze. The commode’s two doors are embellished with round Chinese lacquer panels with separately rendered oriental views of an island. They are framed within marquetry medallions hung from rings on ribbon bows, all inlaid on rosewood. Both side panels are also similarly decorated, quite exceptional for a Dutch cabinet. In between the doors at the front,
the vertical board features a diamond-shaped lacquer panel strung from a thin trompe l’oeil string bow. The commode is topped by a Gris St. Anne marble slab.
