Description

Netherlands, Louis XVI period, late 18th century.

Made of gilded limewood and finely carved throughout, these elegant torchères display the refined ornamentation characteristic of the Louis XVI period.

The corners of the bases are adorned with winged putto heads, while the shafts are richly decorated with carved acanthus leaves and flowing draperies. The torchères are crowned with strings of pearls and metal bobeches with delicately scalloped edges.

Torchères were designed to hold candles and were traditionally placed in the corners of rooms or between windows and pieces of furniture, providing both illumination and an imposing decorative presence.
