Description

A well proportioned armchair with an impressively high back. The wood carved in the best 17th-century Dutch tradition. The front legs of S-volute form, carved with sunflower rosettes and acanthus foliage, ending in claw-and-ball-feet are joint by a rail of two moulded S-volutes equally carved with foliage and sunflower rosettes. The legs at the rear are of twisted form with rectangular joints and are connected to the front legs by twisted rails with equally rectangular joints. The curved armrests with carved foliage above the S-volute posts with foliage and sunflower rosettes.

The exceptional size makes this an impressive armchair. The sunflowers in the carving are a symbol of unfaltering devotion and the armchair may well have been a gift from a wife to a husband.
