Description

A miniature brass table lantern clock from northern France, circa 1780. The narrow case has a gabled front engraved with a geometric pattern and flowers, glazed side doors and a glazed back. A bell and decorative finials crown the case, which stands on turned feet.

The 4.8-cm enamel dial has Roman numerals and fleur-de-lis hands. The going and striking trains are arranged one behind the other, a characteristic of this small regional tradition. Two spring barrels power the thirty-hour movement, regulated by anchor escapement and a silk-suspended pendulum. A countwheel controls half-hour striking on a bell.

Height: 14.5 cm; width: 6 cm; depth: 8 cm.
