Description

A French Louis XVI ormolu mantel clock 'au lion', attributed to Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. A striding lion supports the finely chased drum case, which is embellished with marcasite-set garlands, a bow and an urn finial. The rare glass dial has reverse-painted hour and minute numerals and marcasite-set hands. It reveals a fully skeletonised movement with pierced plates, bridges and spring barrels, signed Martin A Paris. Anchor escapement with a silk-suspended pendulum regulates the movement, which strikes the half hours on a bell by means of a countwheel. The case stands on an oval base with acanthus decoration and rosettes. Height 37 cm; width 20.5 cm; depth 13 cm. Price on request.
