Description

An early French brass Capucine travel clock, circa 1790, with half-hour striking, repeat and alarm. The rectangular case has a bell surmounted by an urn finial and carrying ring, four corner finials, doors to the sides and back, and turned feet.

The 10.5-cm enamel dial has Arabic numerals, red quarter-hour markings, pierced brass hands and a silvered engraved alarm disc. The absence of a surrounding bezel is characteristic of early Capucines.

Two spring barrels power the movement for over eight days. It has anchor escapement and a silk-suspended pendulum, with rack striking on a bell. The hour strike repeats automatically after a few minutes, the so-called Morbier strike. A side lever repeats the last hour on demand. A separate small spring barrel with pull winding powers the alarm.

Height with carrying ring lowered: 24.5 cm; width: 12.5 cm; depth: 9.5 cm.
