Description

An early Swiss key-wound cylinder music box by Epee, circa 1845. The mechanism, numbered 4717, plays twelve melodies on a 27-cm pinned cylinder and steel comb. Its unusually thick cylinder plays two melodies per revolution, allowing a finely toothed comb despite the extensive repertoire. Three levers provide an immediate stop, start/stop at the end of a melody and repeat/change. The plain walnut case has a side flap for the controls and winding arbor, with a compartment for the key on the opposite side. Height 13.5 cm; width 48 cm; depth 19 cm.
