A rare South German Renaissance sculptural table clock depicting the Madonna and Child, circa 1630. The gilt-brass figure stands within a radiant aureole above a moulded ivory base containing a small champlevé dial. Its spring-driven movement has verge escapement and hour striking; the Madonna’s arm moves in time with the striking mechanism. A technically ingenious and highly decorative early clock.
