Description

A Japanese Shaku Dokei wall clock, circa 1850, with a striking mechanism incorporated into the descending weight. The pierced pointer moves down an elongated scale with adjustable brass hour markers, designed for the traditional Japanese system of seasonal hours. Small pins behind the markers release the striking mechanism.

The brass movement has a front plate pierced and engraved with chrysanthemums and decorative corner pillars. It is regulated by verge escapement with a short pendulum. Both the going movement and the spring-driven striking mechanism require daily winding. The descending weight contains the spring barrel, locking disc and bell for the striking work.

The elongated wooden case has a glazed hood with a sliding front panel, pierced brass side frets and a small drawer for the winding key. Height: 62 cm; width: 9.8 cm.
