Description

A miniature Frisian polychrome wall clock, known as a stoelschippertje or little skipper, circa 1780. These compact stool clocks are traditionally associated with use aboard barges. The verge escapement and short fixed pendulum allow the movement to run when slightly out of level.

The painted dial has Roman numerals, flowers and two horn-blowing cherubs beside a floral wreath. The pierced cast-brass hands include an alarm disc integrated into the hour hand. The weight-driven movement runs for one day and strikes the half hours on a bell by means of a countwheel. It also has an alarm.

Cast gilt-lead lions and pierced foliate ornaments frame the dial. The polychrome bracket includes seated monkeys, while the backboard is decorated with mermaids and terminates in an ornamental knob. Side doors give access to the movement.
